The sustainable agriculture project was developed out of the idea that our University could use its land in more sustainable way. That being said, our focus has now shifted to supporting local farmers in their efforts to produce organic and conventional crops. We hope by providing valuable resources to these local farmers we will create and promote more sustainable agriculture in our community. Our efforts emphasize educational tools, organic certification support, and the marketing of local produce. Also, we are in the process of organizing local community supported agricultural (CSA’s) opportunities for farmers and community members. In the spring, our group is hoping to organize a sustainable and successful farmers market at the Lamoni Community Center. By offering a weekly market, the local farmers and residents stand to gain mutual benefits. The groundwork for this endeavor is being laid during the fall semester. It is a new and exciting project and has the potential to positively impact local farmers, community members, and of course, our SIFE team.
